From Travel Mishaps to Fluent Speaking: How the English Speaking Club Season Started

October kicked off with the first online meeting of the English Speaking Club. Participants dove into an extremely lively and practical topic – unexpected travel problems.

After all, every traveller knows that flawless trips only happen in promotional brochures, while reality often throws plenty of surprises our way.

During the meeting, we took a close look at a range of unexpected challenges that one might encounter on the road:

  • Cancelled flights and flight delays: what to do when your flight is grounded, how to talk to airline representatives, and how to claim compensation in English.
  • Lost luggage: every tourist's nightmare when a suitcase flies off to another corner of the planet. We discussed the step-by-step action plan at the airport and how to explain to the lost and found staff what was inside.
  • Missed connections: situations where a delay on your first flight causes you to miss the next one, and how to quickly rebook a ticket.
  • Unexpected costs and financial troubles: sudden fees, losing a wallet, blocked cards, or the urgent need to find accommodation due to an emergency.
  • Language and cultural barriers: navigation issues in an unfamiliar country when locals don't speak English, or getting lost at night.

Participants not only broke down useful vocabulary and phrases for these situations but also shared their own funny or challenging travel stories, practicing conversational English in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
