On September 30, 2026, International Translation Day, the Department of English Philology and Language Didactics at Sumy State Pedagogical University, represented by Associate Professors Svitlana ALEKSENKO, Viktor BONDARENKO and Olena BAHATSKA together with their students enrolled in the Educational and Professional Master’s Program “English and German, translation included”, Specialty B11 Philology (Germanic languages and literatures (translation included), English as Major) joined in an online event hosted by the Department of Germanic Philology and Methodics of Foreign Languages at Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University.
The event was organized to celebrate the profession of a translator as an interlingual mediator and to highlight the challenges of the profession.
The gathering spotlighted a translator’s scares and challenges as well various linguistic traps while the featured English-Ukrainian and reversed translation pairs emphasized the significance of the pragmatics, modality, context, register and target audience being taken into account. Attendees faced the challenge of spotting machine-assisted, AI-generated and human translation variants and tried their hand at rendering Ukrainian news headlines into English. Not forgotten were the subtleties of managing rapid-fire translation demands of clientele. The experience proved brisk, informative, interactive and engaging!
Held to honour the profession and in the times of galvanizing expansion of artificial intelligence which starts to question the very point of human presence in practically every sphere, this get-together of professionals and those aspiring testified to the indispensability of HUMAN as the best interlingual and, what is more, intercultural intermediary.
